Director of Communications – Austin, Texas

The Texas Space Commission is looking for a Director of Communications (Director V).

The Texas Space Commission was established to strengthen Texas’ proven leadership in civil, commercial, and military aerospace activities by promoting works to promote innovation in the field of space operations exploration capabilities, including the integration of multiple industry sectors and commercial aerospace opportunities, including the integration of space, aeronautics, and aviation industries into the Texas economy. We are located primarily within the Texas State Capitol Complex in Austin.

What You’ll Earn

The salary is $9,166.67 - $10,833.34 a month ($110,000.04 - $130,000.08 a year).

What You’ll Do

This is a job that performs highly advanced (senior-level) managerial work providing direction and guidance in strategic communications and media relations for the Texas Space Commission. Work involves coordination of all internal and external communication resources as well as press-related engagements to highlight the Governor’s issues and legislative priorities.

  • Leads development of a strategic communications plan for the Commission, in alignment with the Commission’s Strategic Plan.
  • Oversees, supervises, and coordinates Communications and Press Office operations.
  • Coordinates the process for responding to media contacts.
  • Develops media strategy (integrated digital channels) for announcing the Commission’s initiatives.
  • Monitors media coverage of the Commission’s events, appearances, and messages, and responds as needed.
  • Advises the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and appropriate stakeholders on media reaction to proposed initiatives and actions.
  • Coordinates with appropriate stakeholders, primarily Office of the Governor communication personnel, regarding the Commission’s positions on issues for press releases.
  • Directs development and management of the Commission’s website, including social media platforms.
  • Troubleshoots high profile situations.
  • Serve as an official spokesperson, as requested by the Executive Director, for the Commission.
  • Implements policies and procedures, at the direction of the Executive Director, for activities related to public communication, media relations and community relations.
  • Directs the administration, management, analysis, and enhancement of the Commission’s efforts to ensure all media relations are consistent with the Governor’s direction and official position.
  • Recommends staffing needs as well as hardware and software technologies, as appropriate.
  • Reviews proposed legislation and directs the development and implementation of policies and procedures affecting public information and media/community relations.
  • As needed, accompanies the Executive Director and/or Board of Directors at public appearances.
  • Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of others.
  • Preparing speeches and talking points for the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other Executives within the Commission
  • Assists the Executive Director with coordination of Commission programs.
  • Create a standard operating procedure, policies and process, for all media engagements for the Commission board as well as personnel.
  • Demonstrates subject matter expertise, professional confidence, and clarity when representing the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Provides support to produce the content of a Strategic Plan, including all supplemental resources (PowerPoint presentations; one-page handouts; multimedia videos; social media content; Public Service Announcements) that informs stakeholders.
  • Produce informative material for administration of the Space Exploration and Aeronautics Research Fund.

How You’ll Qualify

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree; and
  • Five (5) years of demonstrated and progressively responsible communication or public relations experience. At least three (3) years of the required experience must be in a senior management or executive-level position.

Note: Experience and education may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.
